Last week, I went on three interviews and found a mentor! Each of the people I interviewed worked at a college on computational chemistry. I learned that the field was highly diverse and interdisciplinary, but there were things in common: all their research had to do with proteins, and they highly valued curiosity and willingness to learn. Commuting to and from each university for the interviews helped me realize that distance would the most important factor for choosing a mentor. I was very happy to announce that my mentor is Hao Tian, a graduate research assistant at SMU. I’m excited to learn from him because his research on the PASSer project significantly involves machine learning and applies it to a biochemical purpose: the discovery of allosteric sites on proteins. Finding a mentor has meant a lot more work, but I think it’s worth it to get the most out of the mentorship.
Next week, I’m looking forward to my first mentor visit, where I’ll hopefully be able to discuss my original work, another thing I’ll be continuing this week. I still have a lot more code to write, but it’s gratifying to see the website build toward its final interactive form.
