This past week I wrote my topic proposal and completed a research assessment, along with preparing for an upcoming interview and mentor visit this week. This year, I am continuing to engage with computational chemistry. I may not major in it, but I enjoy the subject, and I’m excited to extend my work from last year. Plus, I have more experience to support my projects, in and out of ISM. For example, I’ve learned from Chemistry Olympiad and from formal computer science studying for the AP exam. For my research assessment, I chose to look at descriptors for computational chemistry. It proved helpful to already have a working knowledge of what they are and how to apply them, and this type of research is certainly more helpful than last year when I felt like I had to figure everything out about the field from scratch.
This week, I am interviewing Dr. Son at SMU and meeting my mentor afterwards. I’m looking forward to getting more insight on the wet lab side of chemistry and to discussing options for my original work later. Interviews were a significant source of information last year, only behind my mentor, and I’m glad to have one scheduled this week and then one the week after at UTD. I’m also excited to start writing code for my first semester work.
