This past week I submitted my final product proposal and calendar with mentor feedback, along with a research assessment over the drug discovery process. In my research, I looked at the process of how potential future drugs are identified for the first time. I had spent a lot of time throughout my ISM journey looking at how to evaluate drug candidates but never how to choose them in the first place. I wish the article went more in depth, but my big takeaway was that the search process begins with a target like a cellular receptor and then with binding assays to identify which molecules interact well. The following process of lead optimization involves more of the ADMET properties that I’ve been researching.
I have had to put my final product on hold for a little while because I’ve been simultaneously working to put on a math competition through Mu Alpha Theta. After receiving the necessary clearances from administrators, I am excited to start promoting the event, though I am a little apprehensive because it’s never been done before. This week, I plan to complete another research assessment to better understand how to identify drug candidates, and I also need to slightly edit my original work to make it more accessible. I hope I don’t have to reschedule too many of my activities with the winter weather this week, though I wouldn’t mind some real snow here.
