This past week I adapted my interview questions for my interview with a professional chemist, which I was very happy to confirm. Since my topic straddles the line between data science and chemistry, it was important for me to adjust my list of field-specific questions for this interview so that I get the most out of it. I also completed my topic proposal, and I found it was helpful for me to pinpoint what my field of research would be. In a word, I plan to study cheminformatics, within which I hope to use machine learning as a tool. I am not sure if the professional I am interviewing utilizes artificial intelligence, but I know they use models quite frequently, as it is often difficult or impossible to test everything in a production setting directly. Since I also need to research the data science side of my topic, I began reaching out to machine learning/artificial intelligence professionals who I could potentially interview. Though I did not have a formal research assessment his week, I continued to work with machine learning locally in order to have a better idea about what my final product could look like. Next week, I’m looking forward to further pinpointing my direction of study with the original work proposal and my first interview.
