Last week, I presented my research speech: the first real ISM speech of the year. It went better than I expected, probably because I took a different approach to my preparation. Instead of learning bullet points, I wrote a script and memorized as much as I could. Even though I didn’t do the ideal one hour of practice per minute of speaking, and I didn’t perfect all my gestures and movements, I found that I was confident “on stage” because I knew what I was going to say next—I even improvised a little bit. I was also relieved to hear my ISM peers say they were engaged during my presentation because I understand that chemistry is not everyone’s forte, and I really tried to make my examples understandable.
I’m looking forward to the original work speech, but for that, I’ll need to prepare my project. Last week, I completed a research assessment over the LIME algorithm, which furthered my understanding of the major techniques used to explain machine learning models. Now, I will need to learn how to implement the algorithms I’ve researched in code. This week, I plan to spend some time solidifying my ideas and starting to program. Hopefully, I’ll be able to find time for that along with everything else I need to work on.
